People gathered at The RiverRoom on December 1, 2015 for a fundraising event for the HBCU Battle of the Bands competition which took place on January 17, 2016.
The room was set up so that guests could see videos of past battle of the band competitions and listen to the announcements and fundraising opportunities, the five levels of sponsorship offered, before the main announcement that everyone had been waiting for:
who would be participating in the battle of the bands!!
The room was full of excitement and happiness as the competitors were announced:
North Carolina A&T Drumline vs North Carolina Central University Drumline
and
Winston Salem State University vs Elizabeth City State University
"This event is aimed at inspiring the youth of Wilmington and surrounding areas by providing an in depth look at the pomp and circumstance located on a College or University campus while focusing on the academic achievements of the various institutions. The “Experience” will give students the opportunity to meet with admissions counselors, and gain information on various admissions qualifications, scholarships, while giving college band directors the opportunity to showcase their band programs for future recruitment. There is a heightened need to support the community with positive events targeted towards the youth, which have been victims of exposure to negative events that have transpired. The “HBCU Experience” will combat the unfortunate negativity that has plagued our community with hope and display the result of dedication, and positive support. We are expecting an audience of over 5000 people to attend the 2016 event, but the impact of this event will go far beyond the day, as students and families will feel the effects for a lifetime."
